Irom Sharmila floats new party 'People’s Resurgence and Justice Alliance'

New Delhi: Activist Irom Sharmila on Tuesday floated a new political party—People’s Resurgence and Justice Alliance (PRJA) to contest Manipur Assembly election next year. She launched the party in Imphal, the capital of the state.

The 44-year-old rights activist said her party would work to promote gender justice, economic resilience and self-reliance of the people.

She also said that she hopes that the party would bring about a political change in Manipur where draconian laws like AFSPA will not trouble the common man.

“We hope to bring about a political change in Manipur where draconian laws like AFSPA will not trouble the common man,” Sharmila said, announcing her new party.

Earlier in September, Irom Sharmila had met Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal to seek his advice on politics.

Sharmila had broken her 16-year-old fast on August 9 and said she would form a new political party to contest for the 2017 Manipur Assembly election.

“To end fast is not the end of my movement. There will be a new beginning,” Sharmila had said.

The activist had also said that she wanted to become the chief minister of Manipur so that she could fight for repeal of AFSPA.
