Karnataka: In a fresh setback for Karnataka in Cauvery case, the Supreme Court on Tuesday directed the state government to release 2000 cusecs of water per day to Tamil Nadu till further orders.

“Hearing will continue tomorrow; SC tells Karnataka to continue releasing 2000 cusecs /day to Tamil Nadu till further orders,” the court said.

The court also said that Karnataka and Tamil Nadu administrations must ensure peace and harmony in both the states over the Cauvery issue.

The DMK on Monday had staged ‘Rail Roko’ agitation in Chennai demanding the formation of the Cauvery Management Board (CMB).

Protesters raised slogans criticising the Centre and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for taking a stand against setting up the CMB immediately.

The Supreme Court on October 4 directed the Union Water Resources Ministry to depute an expert team to assess availability of water in the reservoirs in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu and submit a report by October 17.

The 765-km-long Cauvery originates at Talakaveri in Karnataka’s Kodagu district and flows through Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry before joining the Bay of Bengal.
