New Delhi: In a significant development, former Mumbai Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria and two others were questioned by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday in connection with the Sheena Bora murder case.
Besides Maria, the CBI recorded the statements of present Joint Commissioner of Police Deven Bharti and Deputy Commissioner of Police S.N. Chowdhury.
Maria was supervising the case until he was unceremoniously removed in September last year.
The trio comprised the officials supervising the investigations into the case but the CBI has not indicated the outcome of the questioning.
At the height of the investigations, Maria was abruptly transferred and promoted as DGP – Home Guards by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and later the case was yanked off Mumbai police and handed over to CBI.
The investigating teams set up by the police for probing the case were disbanded and the CBI launched its own investigations.
On October 21, CBI had filed its second supplementary charge sheet before a special CBI court in the high-profile murder case.
As per the chargesheet, Irdrani Mukerjea kept Peter informed about the selection of place for the disposal of the dead body of Sheena Bora. He was given minute by minute updates about the entire operation and knew every bit of the operation, from the conception to the execution of the crime.
The 24-year-old Sheena was strangled in a car in April 2012 allegedly by her mother Indrani Mukerjea and her former driver Shyamvar Rai, along with Sanjeev Khanna, Indrani’s former husband. Her body was dumped in a forest in Raigad district.
