New Delhi: The Election Commission has decided to take cognisance of parties that over-exaggerate their capabilities and promise ‘the moon to voters’ who readily believe them and give them their vote.

With the Punjab and Uttar Pradesh polls soon coming, the EC has said that the 2017 assembly elections should be devoid of false promises from parties who cannot fulfil it. The commission said that it will remove a party’s symbol if the party promises the moon without submitting an affidavit on a stamp paper to the commission.

The decision was taken on September 23 where the EC decided that it will hold parties more accountable for their promises to the voters. The decision also follows that of the Supreme Court directing the commission to push guidelines on party manifestos.
