New Delhi: Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi was released after one and a half hours from his second detention at a police station on Wednesday amid high-voltage protests over the suicide of an ex-serviceman.

After being released, Gandhi said that the present govt has to respect its people and the soldiers.

“Was it my fault that I wanted to express my condolences? I wanted to meet them, is it wrong,” the Congress leader said.

Gandhi was released from Tilak Marg police station where he was shifted after his detention at Connaught Place police station in the heart of the city for obstructing “orderliness”.

Earlier, Gandhi was detained for around 70 minutes at Mandir Marg police station while trying to meet the grieving family of the dead soldier Ram Kishan Grewal, who killed himself after consuming poison on Tuesday evening, at the RML Hospital.

Slammig the Narendra Modi govt, Rahul Gandhi said, “When I asked police why they acted this way, they said they had orders from higher up.”

Rahul Gandhi said this was the most difficult day for them (family members of late ex serviceman) but even today they were made to suffer.

He said government should apologize to the family members of the deceased ex-serviceman.

Rahul had earlier written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi stating that the issue of OROP was adversely affecting the armed forces and needed to be solved.
