New Delhi: The old age tradition of only men performing the last rites was put to an end by four girls from Varanasi who carried the pyre of their father to the Harishchandra ghat for cremation.

The daughters of late Yogesh Chandra Upadhyaya — Ramya, Garima, Saumya and Mahima carried the pyre of their father to the cremation ground on 4th November.

The end of this long running tradition by girls witnessed full support from their family members and relatives who were also present at the ground to lend their support.

When asked about incident, Garima said there should not be any discrimination between men and women. The four sisters further added that they want to set an example for the society by giving a message of gender equality.
