New Delhi: With the contentious Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls soon impending in the country, Republic Party of India (RPI) chief Ramdas Athawale said that his party was hoping to contest the elections by aligning with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and by contending actress Rakhi Sawant against BSP leader Mayawati.
“Mayawati has, for quite some time, been shying away from herself fighting polls, be it for the state Assembly or the Lok Sabha. We would like to see if she is going to change that this time. If she does, we would field Rakhi Sawant who is our women’s wing president, from the very seat the BSP chief chooses for herself,” Athawale told reporters.
In case if a collision with BJP does not materialise, Athawale said that his party will proceed by fielding its candidates in 200 and more assembly segments in Uttar Pradesh.
Rakhi Sawant joined the RPI party in June, 2014 and expressed her desire to work with dalits.
