New Delhi: After the decision was made to permit farmers to make cash withdrawals up to Rs 25, 000 per week, the Centre on Monday announced that farmers will be now allowed to use old Rs 500 notes to buy seeds.

The Finance Ministry issued a statement allowing the farmers to use the old currency notes to purchase seeds from the centres, units or outlets belonging to the central or state governments, public sector undertakings, national or state seeds corporations, central or state agricultural universities and the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR).

“Farmers can purchase seeds from the centres, units or outlets belonging to the central or state governments, public sector undertakings, national or state seeds corporations, central or state agricultural universities and the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), on production of proof of identity,” the statement said.

“The government is committed to ensure that the farmers are suitably facilitated during the Rabi season,” it added.

The deadline for the payment of crop insurance premium has also been extended by 15 days.
