JODHPUR: Controversial guru Asaram Bapu is to remain in jail for now as the court here on Saturday rejected his bail plea.

The temporary relief has been denied to the self-styled god-man who is in jail since September 2013 for allegedly raping a 16-year-old minor at his ashram.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and prominent lawyer Subramanian Swamy took up the bail plea of Asaram Bapu in a Jodhpur court on Friday where the court reserved its verdict for Saturday.

The BJP leader Friday argued for more than an hour and then told reporters that he had cited some important judgments of the Supreme Court. “I did my best to show to the court that he has been caught up and has been kept in jail for such a long time on the basis of circumstantial evidences,” Swamy said, adding, “I will ensure his bail because he deserves it and if this does not happen, I will appeal further.”
