New Delhi: Humanity in the nation stooped to a new low after a mentally unstable minor was humiliated, stripped naked and her hair cut off by her co-passengers after she was accused of stealing a bag in the AC 3-tier compartment of the Howrah-Jodhpur Express.

As per the father of the minor who is a daily wage labourer, the 17-year-old became mentally unstable after she developed a brain tumour.

After the incident was reported, the police disregarded her current age (17 years 10 months) as mentioned on her school-leaving certificate and instead filed an FIR mentioning her as 19 years old. On the basis of this they sent her to judicial custody on Tuesday after she was produced before a local magistrate.

Commenting on the incident, station officer of Agra Fort, Lalit Tyagi said, "The girl was caught with a bag, but passengers took the law into their own hands and cut off her hair. They misbehaved with the TTE, too, who came to her rescue".

While the minor was booked under Indian penal Code (IPC) Section 380 (theft), the passengers were booked under IPC Sections 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty), 352 (assault), 353 (assault to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), 507 (criminal intimidation).

Apart from the mentally challenged victim, no one else has been arrested.

Previously, a youngster in Agra was booked for allegedly trying to rape a 9-year-old girl while she was heading back home.
