Hauz Khas, a sprawling location situated in Green Park, is normally known for its social sanctuaries where college students, tourists and residents of the city itself come to visit. However, in the intervening night of Sunday, a student from Northeast India who had recently arrived in Delhi was raped on the pretext of offering a shorter route.

The 24-year-old student, who left a pub in Hauz Khas around 11:30 PM and was in an inebriated condition, was approached by a man who offered her a lift home. The girl was then led through the Deer Park by the man who said that there was a shortcut through the park. The victim, unbeknownst of the man’s intention, followed him through the park.

“She left for home around 11.30 p.m. We suspect that the man, who was probably loitering around, approached her after spotting her alone. The unsuspecting victim, who agreed to his offer, was led into the Deer Park after the man told her it was a shortcut,” police investigating the case said.

The woman was then led by the man to an isolated spot inside the park and was thrashed and raped. “She has also alleged that he thrashed her and took away her phone. She screamed for help, but no one came to her rescue since it was late and it was a deserted spot. The man then fled,” said the police.

A case has been registered under Section 376 of the Indian Penal code. Police confirmed that the accused will be caught soon.
