The Railway Protection Force (RPF) recovered 1500 tortoises at a railway station in Bengal on Saturday 26 February.
As per the railway police officials, the tortoises were found packed in 35 bags in a railway coach of a train at Malda Town railway station.
Three persons have been arrested so far by the RPF and investigations are under way regarding the theft.
The RPF have as per sources handed over the tortoises to the forest department. It is not yet known where the tortoises were being smuggled to.
Wildlife smuggling or trafficking involves the illegal gathering, transportation and distribution of animals and their derivatives.
