Uphaar theatre owner Gopal Ansal on Monday evening surrendered before the Tihar jail authorities to serve the remaining seven months of his jail term.
Gopal Ansal along with brother Sushil Ansal is a co-accused in the 1997 Uphaar cinema hall fire tragedy in which 59 persons were killed and over 100 got injured in a stampede.
Earlier today, Supreme Court had quashed Gopal’s plea seeking more time to surrender citing the mercy and pardon petition he has moved with the President of India.
The court during a ruling this month said that since Gopal Ansal, did not suffer any age-related complications, as is the case with Sushil Ansal, there could be no principle of parity and he must spend one year in prison.
The apex court on February 9 sentenced the builder to one year in jail. A huge fire engulfed Uphaar theatre when Hindi movie ‘Border’ was being screened on June 13, 1997.
