NEW DELHI: Congress President Sonia Gandhi has reached out to the leaders of the various Opposition parties by inviting them to an Iftar dinner next week, said reports.
With the monsoon session of Parliament coming up, this seems to be a strategic act of diplomacy on Congress' part. While BJP ducks beneath a pile of scams looming over it, the Lalitgate controversy, involving External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje, and the Vyapam scam, Congress is being pro-active and showing a front of Opposition unity.
The leaders invited by Gandhi are those from Samajwadi Party (SP), Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Janata Dal (United), Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), National Conference (NC) and the Left parties. While Kanimozhi from DMK and Mamta Banerjee's Trinamool Congress appear on the guest list, the AIADMK and the BJD have been left out.
This comes at a time when the government is bracing itself for a stormy monsoon session, fireworks from the Opposition are sure to explode on the floor of the House. The scams and controversies running abound are to be finally battled out in the session, with the government expected to give its explanations.
