MUMBAI: In a shocking development in the Teesta Setalvad case, CBI on Monday raided the house and office of the activist who has been accused of illegally receiving funds from abroad.

A team of 16 CBI officials carried out the raids in Mumbai and the activist expressed shock towards the move claiming that she did not understand as to why the raids had been ordered when she had already written to the CBI offering complete support with their inquiry.

“This is vendetta by the BJP. They are trying to humiliate us,” she was quoted in a media report, adding, “The Vyapam scam has killed 60-odd people, yet the CBI is busy with this.”

A case was registered against Setalvad last week by the CBI and her organization Sabrang for reported violation of the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act in receiving funds from the international markets without seeking permission from the home ministry.

The First Information Report or FIR also mentions about the agency of Setalvad’s husband, Javed Anand and Gulam Mohammed Peshimam, both directors in Sabrang Communications and Publishing based in Santacruz, Mumbai.

53-year-old activist has worked for several years for the 2002 Gujarat riots victims and has alleged persecution by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). She is also accused of embezzling funds meant for a riots museum by the Gujarat police.
