An Army Jawan of 173 Battalion of Territorial Army (Engineering) abandoned his post in Gantmulla area of Jammu and Kashmir and fled with an AK – 47 rifles and 3 magazines on Wednesday.

According to sources, the Jawan had recently joined the Indian Army. The accused is a resident of Pulwama area of Jammu and Kashmir and has been identified as Zahoor Ahmad Chokar.

There have been instances in the Valley where police constables ran way with the weapons of the J&K police and joined militant ranks but such an instance with the Indian Army is very rare.

However, in case of Zahoor Ahmad Chokar it is still not clear that he has joined militant ranks or not. The Indian Amy has launched and intense search operation to nab the deserter.

According to sources in the Army, there are steps being taken to monitor the stress levels of the army personnel’s to contain such situations.
