At least seven Amarnath pilgrims were killed while several others including police personnel were injured in a terror attack on a yatri bus and a police party in Anantnag on Monday evening.
This is not the first time Amarnath pilgrims have been targeted by the terrorists. Many attacks have taken place on Amarnath Yatris in past as well repeatedly exposing the security lapses prevalent during the yatra.
Here is a brief timeline of prominent terror attacks on Amarnath pilgrims:
1993 — 3 people were killed in two separate attacks.
1994 — Two pilgrims were killed in a dastardly attack.
1995 — The year was witness to 3 attacks on Amarnath pilgrims, however there were no casualties.
1996 — No casualties in two terror attacks.
2000— The biggest attack in the history of Amarnath Yatra resulted in death of 35 pilgrims, while many were injured.
2001— A militant hurled two grenades at a camp and later opened fire near the Amarnath shrine on the night of 20 July 2001, killing nearly 15 people.
2002—At least 10 people were killed in this terror attack.
2002— Another terror attack took place in August in which at least 10 people were killed.
2003—Eight people were killed when terrorists opened fire at Vaisno Devi base camp.
2006— 1 pilgrims was killed in the terror strike.
2017— The most recent attack on Amarnath pilgrims has resulted in the death of at least 7 pilgrims, while several are critically injured fighting for their life.
