The opposition on Tuesday picked Former West Bengal governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi for the post of vice president, says ANI.
In a closed-door meeting held in the Parliament, 18 opposition parties unanimously decided to appeal to Gopal Krishna Gandhi to contest the vice presidential elections.
Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, DR Manmohan Singh, JDU’s Sharad Yadav and CPM’s Sitaram Yechury together on Gopal Krishna Gandhi’s name.
Two minutes of silence was also observed at the opposition leaders’ meeting at the Parliament over the terrorist attack on Amarnath Yatra Pilgrims.
Leaders from various political parties including Congress, NCP, JDU, SP, BSP, CPM, CPI, DMK, RLD, NC, JMM, Congress, NCP, JDU, SP, BSP, CPM, CPI, DMK, RLD, NC and JMM were present at the meeting.
Meanwhile, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee extended her congratulations to Gopalkrishna Gandhi on being nominated as the candidate for the post of Vice President.
“Congratulations to Gopal Gandhiji for being the unanimous choice of all opposition parties for Vice President. His credentials are his biggest asset,” Banerjee tweeted.
Polling and counting of votes for the vice president’s post will take place on August 5. Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) is yet to come up with their candidate.
