Activist Irom Sharmila on Wednesday finally filed an application for marriage with her long-time British friend Desmond Coutinho in the office of a Sub Registrar in Tamil Nadu.
Sharmila filed the application under the Hindu Marriage Act but was informed by the office of the Sub Registrar that since it is an inter-religious marriage, that marriage application would have to be registered under the Special Marriage Act.
As per reports, the office of the Sub Registrar will put the marriage application on the notice board for 30 days and if the time period expires without any objection the marriage can be performed after that.
Sharmila moved to Kodaikanal and has been living with her friend for some months, she told a media organisation that she came to Kodaikanal in search of peace and liked the place. Though defeated in her fight, she said she had not given up her cause.
On November 5, 2000 Irom Sharmila started her hunger strike to protest against Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) in Manipur. The fasting continued for 16 years and finally ended on August 9, 2016.
