A day after Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) announced M Venkaiah Naidu as their candidate for the vice president post, the former Union Minister is set to file his nomination papers today alongside the Opposition candidate Gopal krishna Gandhi.
Naidu who stepped down from the post of Union minister of Urban Development, Housing and Urban Poverty on Monday is reported to file his nomination at 11 AM (IST) today in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP President Amit Shah.
According to reports two sets of nomination will be filled by National Democratic Alliance (NDA) for its vice presidential candidate Venkaih Naidu.
In the first set of nomination PM Modi will be the proposer and Home Minister Rajnath Singh will be the seconder. In the second set Finance Minister Arun Jaitley will be the proposer and Minister of External Affairs Sushma Swaraj will second it.
The Vice President poll is scheduled to take place on 5th August and today marks the last day for filing nomination papers for the top post.
A total of 790 MPs of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha combined will constitute the Electoral College for the Vice President selection.
Gopal Krishna Gandhi has been backed by the Congress for the post, but his chances of defeating Naidu is less favoured as NDA holds clear majority in the Lok Sabha.
