In what can be called a ‘bizarre vision’ of a sort, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) Vice-Chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar on Sunday asked General VK Singh to help him procure an Army tank to be kept inside the campus that would help the students to instill nationalism in them.
Speaking during the Kargil Vijay Diwas celebration, JNU VC said, “I would like to request VK Singh ji to help us procure an Army tank so that we can put it on display in the university.”
Justifying the need for a tank inside JNU campus, Jagadesh said that the presence will be a reminder to the students of the sacrifice and greatness of Indian defence forces.
“Presence of an Army tank will constantly remind JNU students of great sacrifice and valour of Indian Army and defence forces,” he added.
The event organised by the university administration and Veterans India had cricketer Gautam Gambhir, Major General (retd) G D Bakshi and other dignitaries in the attendance.
Notably, JNU students were accused of raising anti-India slogans on the campus during an event in February 2016.
The students were holding a demonstration within the campus to mark their protest against the capital punishment.
The protests divided the country in shades of opinions fuelling to the debate of nationalism.
