At least 17 people including a 3-month-old girl were killed while over 20 people were pulled out from the rubble of the 4-storey building which collapsed in Mumbai’s suburb area, Ghatkopar on Tuesday morning. The collapse was being linked to a local minister related to Shiv Sena, who had been carrying out renovation on the ground floor of the building.

Following the speculations, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has ordered an inquiry.

Shortly after the incident took place, the fire department was informed and the chief fire officer, Prabhat Rahangdale along with his team had rushed to the Damodar Park area where the collapse took place.

As per official reports, there were about 12 families habiting in the building. Following the collapse, a case has been registered against Sunil Shitap — minister getting the ground floor renovated — for negligence and culpable homicide.

Sunil Shitap has also been detained by the police for further questioning.

The wife of Sunil Shitap, Swati Sunil Shithap who was also involved in running the nursing care, had contested the last elections to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), earlier this year on a Shiv Sena ticket.

Commenting on the matter, former Congress corporator Pravin Chedda said, “This hospital has been shut for the past two months. He (Sunil Shitap) wants to make a guest house here… He should be arrested.”

Meanwhile, the Mumbai Mayor, Mahadeshwar has promised that the guilty will not be spared.
