A Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader was shot dead by unidentified assailants in Bhagor area of West Bengal on Sunday.

The police suspect the involvement of Maoist in the region behind the murder.

The deceased identified as Ashikur Rehman was attacked by unknown gunmen hours before a procession by the Zamin Jeevika Committee was to take place.

Rehman lost his life while he was being taken to the nearby hospital.

Meanwhile, local TMC leader Arabul Islam has alleged that Rehman was killed by the representatives of the Zamin Jeevika Committee.

Speaking to the media, Superintendent of Police (SP) Arijit Sinha said the matter is under investigation and will get to a concrete result shortly.

The attack comes on the back drop of the murder of a Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) worker in Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala.

The RSS activist on Saturday was allegedly hacked to death by Communist Party of India (CPI-M) loyalists after his palms were chopped off in an assault.
