The O Panneerselvam (OPS) faction and the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edapadi Palaniswami (EPS) faction are all set for a merger and a meeting for the same would be held in the evening to discuss the important issues, sources said on Tuesday. Tamil Nadu minister D Jayakumar on Tuesday said that the merger of the two parties will be done soon.
According to sources, there is a possibility of both the factions joining the NDA government.
This comes at a time when Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is trying to join hands with the AIADMK to expand its reach in the southern region of the country.
Earlier in June, the merger talks between the two factions had failed after O Panneerselvam dissolved the panel formed for talks with EPS faction.
He had demanded that the former AIADMK general secretary VK Sasikala and her nephew TTV Dinakaran be removed from the party before the merger happened.
Seeking to regroup the party, Panneerselvam had formed the 7-member committee to hold talks and seek an amicable solution with the EPS faction. But remarkably, the committee failed to even hold a single meeting with their counterparts before getting dismantled.
The political slugfest in Tamil Nadu raged after the untimely death of Jayalalithaa in December last year and has divided the ruling AIADMK party into two bitter rival camps.
However, after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Rameshwaram, it seems that the BJP is playing a peacemaker between the OPS faction and EPS faction.
