Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s office on Monday rubbished the reports of her joining the Congress party as its working president. Calling the media reports untrue, Priyanka Gandhi’s Personal Assistant P Sahay said no discussion has been taken in this regard.

“Complete fabrication. No such discussion took place whatsoever,” P Sahay, Personal Assistant of Priyanka Gandhi, told ANI.

Reports of Priyanka Gandhi taking over as the Congress working president were doing rounds after her name was discussed in the August 8 Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting.

Congress president Sonia Gandhi had recommended Priyanka’s name and discussed it with senior party leaders including Manmohan Singh. However, Priyanka’s PA denied the report.

The meeting was called to discuss the measures to be taken for the revival of the party and also to decide on the key posts for the 2019 general elections.

The party also took a call if Vice-president Rahul Gandhi should be elevated as the party chief as culmination of organisational election process. The new party chief is expected to be elected by October 15.

There have been occasional demands from party leaders that Rahul Gandhi should take charge of the party from his mother Sonia Gandhi, who became party president in 1998 and is now the longest serving chief of the Congress.
