After creating furore for being given an extension to their service last year, Gujarat police officials NK Amin and Tarun Barot accused in Ishrat Jahan encounter told the Supreme Court on Thursday that the two will resign from their post in the state police. The term of the both the officials ends this month.
Rahul Sharma, a retired police officer had challenged the reappointment of Amin as Superintendent of Police at Tapi district and Barot as the Deputy Superintendent of Police in the Railways in Barodara last year on August 31.
Notably, Amin is out on bail after being in the jail for about eight years in the cases involving Sohrabuddin Sheikh and Ishrat Jahan.
Earlier, the apex court had warned the Gujarat government to take a strong step or else it will be forced to take a decision on the reappointment of the two officers.
Amin allegedly was involved in helping to dispose of the body of Sohrabuddin Sheikh’s wife Kausarbi in 2005. In August 2016 he was released by CBI special court citing lack of evidence against the officer.
He was also accused of shooting Ishrat Jahan in the alleged fake encounter of in June 2004.
