SHILLONG: Former President of India and a renowned scientist Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam passed away on Monday at a hospital in Meghalaya. 83-year-old Dr. Kalam was in Shillong to deliver a lecture at the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), reports said.
According to the reports, Dr. Kalam who was also honord with prestigious awards like Padma Bhushan and Bharat Ratna collapsed on stage at the IIM and was rushed to the Bethany hospital where doctors informed that he suffered a major heart attack.
The 11th President of India who served the nation between 2002 and 2007 was born in Rameswaram on October 15, 1931 to the family of a boatman.
Soon after the news of Dr. Kalam leaving for his heavenly abode broke, Union Home Minister extended his condolences on Twitter. “Deeply saddened at the sudden demise of the former president of India Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam. He was an inspiration to an entire generation,” he said.
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal too shared his grief on the micro-blogging site. “V sad to hear that Dr APJ Abdul Kalam is no more. Nation has lost a real bharat ratna,” he wrote on his Twitter wall.
