More than 19 out of 27 Congress MLAs in Bihar have urged Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi to break the alliance with Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD). Meanwhile, Bihar Congress chief Ashok Chaudhary accused senior AICC functionaries of conspiring to remove him as chief of the state unit in the garb of this split with RJD.

Ashok Chaudhary did not attend the meeting with Rahul Gandhi and the 19 Congress MLAs on Wednesday due to prior engagements but is expected to meet Congress chief Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi soon.

Sources in Congress said Rahul Gandhi had invited the Congress MLAs to avoid a split in the party, who were feeling uneasy after losing power in the state.

According to political experts, Ashok Chaudhary has the support of 14 MLAs and 4 MLCs. Therefore Chaudhary needs 4 more MLAs to escape the anti-defection law and join JDU’s camp.

On the other hand, Nitish Kumar has kept a few ministerial positions vacant to lure the members of Congress. There are also speculations that Ashok Chaudhary also enjoys the support of Bihar CLP leader Sadanand Singh.
