President Ram Nath Kovind on Saturday morning appointed five new Governors for the states of Arunachal Pradesh, Bihar, Tamil Nadu, Assam and Meghalaya. The appointments will come into effect from the date the incumbents assume charge of the new posts, President’s office said in an official statement.
Here are the names of new governors:
– War veteran Brigadier (Dr) BD Mishra (Retd) will be new Governor of Arunachal Pradesh. He has participated in all three major wars that India has fought in 1962, 1965 and 1971.
– Satya Pal Malik appointed as Governor of Bihar. The vacancy had been created following Ram Nath Kovind’s election as President of India. Malik was Minister of state in 1990s and is a three term Parliamentarian.
— Banwali Lal Purohit will be new governor of Tamil Nadu. Purohit, a veteral political leader was serving earlier as Assam Governor. It is the first time the state has got a full time governor since retirement of K Rosaiah in 2016. He will be replacing Ch Vidyasagar Rao. Given the political situation in Tamil Nadu because of turmoil in AIADMK, his role will be quite crucial in the sate.
— Prof Jagdish Mukhi appointed as the Governor of Assam. He was previously the Governor of Andaman & Nicabar islands, Mukhi previously held various profiles in the Delhi Government such as Finance, Plannes, Excise & Taxation and Higher Education. He led the Opposition for almost 10 years in Delhi Assembly.
— Ganga Prasad to be new Governor of Meghalaya. He has been a member of Bihar’s legislative council for 18-years.
— Devendra Kumar Joshi as the Governor of Andaman & Nicobar islands. Joshi earlier served as Chief of Naval Staff from August 2012 to February 2014. He was Defence adviser at the Indian High Commission in Singapore from the year 1996-99.
