Professor Jagdish Mukhi was appointed as the Governor of Assam on Saturday. He had been serving as the Lt. Governor of Andaman and Nicobar before the fresh announcement. Jagdish Mukhi has held important portfolios like minister of Finance, Planning, Excise and Taxation and Higher Education in the Delhi government. Jagdish Mukhi has represented the Janak Puri of Delhi from 1980 till 2014.

In 2014, Jagdish Mukhi lost the Delhi Assembly Elections by 25,000 Votes against AAP candidate Rajesh Rishi. He has been teaching as reader in Shaheed Bhagat Singh College, Delhi University. Jagdish Mukhi was also appointed as best planning minister of the nation by the then Union planning minister Shri Pranab Mukherjee.

Jagdish Mukhi was also involved in a few controversies. In April 2004, Lok Sabha Elections Congress candidate RK Anand wrote to the Election Commission complaining that BJP leader Jagdish Mukhi had allegedly made “defamatory and scurrilous” remarks against him at a press conference.

The Congress candidate also asked the Election Commission to take necessary steps against his because the remarks were violating the ‘moral code of conduct’.

In 2008, CPM named Jagdish Mukhi and then Delhi Mayor Aarti Mehra for being involved in the attack on CPIM workers at the party office when the three-day Central Committee meeting was going on. The police after their investigation also confirmed the involvement of Rashtriya Sawyamsevak Sangh (RSS) in this incident.

Jagdish Mukhi’s wife Prem Mukhi is also actively involved in social development works for women empowerment under the banner of Mahila Jagriti Sangh.
