Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti and the 3rd anniversary of his Swachh Bharat Mission at Delhi’s Vigyan Bhawan today addressed the nation and said “Swachhta can only be achieved when 125 crore Indians will come together. What Mahatma Gandhi has said can never be incorrect.” 

The Prime Minister furthering his agenda of cleanliness in the country said, “I was criticised when I started this, people said it was a holiday and I was forcing student to come to school. But PM asked “Who does not like cleanliness? Should we only do things that gets praised?”

“There are challenges but does that mean we should not do it and run away from them. We will face them and work to overcome them,” PM Modi added.

The dream of “Swachh India will not turn into reality even if 1,000 Mahatma Gandhis, 1 lakh Narendra Modis, all Chief Ministers and governments come together but it will be done by 125 crore Indians.” 

“Positive competitive environment has been created due to Swachh Bharat Mission. We see it in cleanliness rankings, how the organisation are working on cleanliness,” PM Modi said. 

Promoting one of his flagship scheme, PM Modi also said that the Swachh Bharat Mission is about both ‘Vyavastha’ (systems) and ‘Vichar’ (thought process and mindset).

Three years before in 2014 during his first year as Prime Minister, Modi launched his Swachh Bharat mission and pitched lakhs and crores Indians to take a pledge to support him cleaning India.

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other senior leaders including that of the opposition paid tribute to the ‘Father of the Nation’ Mahatma Gandhi on his birth anniversary. Gandhi, who was know for his non-violence approach, tolerance, and mass movements, was one of the key freedom fighters that shaped India’s freedom struggle. 

Vice-President Venkaiah Naidu also unveiled Mahatma Gandhi’s statue in the parking area of Raj Ghat in New Delhi on Gandhi Jayanti.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Governor Ram Naik also spun charkha at Shri Gandhi Ashram Khadi Gramodyog Bhavan in Lucknow on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti.
