NEW DELHI: The weekend did not go too well with the porn movie lovers as they were unable to access some popular porn sites and the blocking appeared to be restricted to only a few ISPs, going by what people claimed on different social media platforms like Reddit and Twitter.

However, it was later confirmed that people using MTNL and Hathway in Mumbai were not able to open porn websites such as Youporn and Pornhub but the loading was quite smooth with the customers using Airtel in Delhi. This has created a major confusion over why some sites were being blocked on particular ISPs.

According to the reports, the blocking of these sites are indeed on the orders from the government and it would appear that the telecom operators and Internet Service Providers (ISPs) have been ordered to block 857 porn sites. This is reported to be the largest number of porn sites to be blocked ever in India.

An ISP confirmed of receiving a list of 857 URLs from the Department of Telecommunications on Friday, July 31 to be blocked, reports said.

The list of URLs that the government has ordered to be blocked is not available at the moment but it would be interesting to see once it is released as to how accurate and relevant the new list is.

In spite of several discussions over banning the porn websites in India, the Supreme Court recently rejected a plea to pass an interim order to block porn sites in India.

“Such interim orders cannot be passed by this court. Somebody may come to the court and say look I am above 18 and how can you stop me from watching it within the four walls of my room. It is a violation of Article 21 [right to personal liberty],” Chief Justice H.L. Dattu supposedly explained last month.

Without any clear message over who has ordered to ban the porn websites in India or what laws are being implemented for the blocks, the strictness over the content on different websites has been escalated.
