Anti-toll tax campaigner Govind Pansare and wife shot at during morning walk

MAHARASHTRA: In a shocking incident reported from Kohlapur in Maharashtra, veteran Left leader Govind Pansareand his wife were shot at near their home today morning. The attack on the couple has been linked to Pansare’s active campaign against toll tax by many.

Govind Pansare was leading agitation by Kolhapur residents’ against toll tax.

According to the repots, the 82-year-old lawyer and writer was following his daily routine of being on a morning walk with his wife when at around 8 AM, unidentified assailants on a bike opened fire at them. The shooters allegedly fired at least four rounds at close range before they fled from the area.

The couple is being treated Astra Adhaar hospital with surgeries for bullet wounds and is reported to be critical.

Condemning the attack on the Pansares, the government has ordered roadblocks across the state to arrest the gunmen.

Senior political leader Sharad Pawar while speaking about the incident stated that this attack is an attempt to ‘suppress voices’ that stand for this ideology. He added, “It was clear after the death of Narendra Dabholkar. This is an attack against the forces who speak out against extreme forces.”

In August 2013, Narendra Dabholkar who was anti-superstition activist was shot dead while he was on a morning walk near his house in Pune.

On the other hand, Shiv Sena Chief Uddhav Thackeray has asked for the immediate arrest of the attackers.

Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Devendra Fadnavis expressed his shock over the incident on Twitter.

The Maharashtra government had then announced a reward of Rs. 10 lakh for someone who is able to share information on his killers.
