Sunni Waqf Board on Wednesday virtually disowned Kapil Sibal after he pleaded in the court that the hearing in Ayodhya Verdict case should be held after the Lok Sabha General Elections in 2019. The Sunni Waqf Board said that they did not ask Kapil Sibal to seek postponement of the case. The Waqf Board also alleged that Kapil Sibal had hijacked the entire case. “Yes, Kapil Sibal is our lawyer but he is also related to a political party. His statement in the Supreme Court yesterday was wrong… we want a solution to the issue at the earliest,” Haji Mehboob of the Sunni Waqf Board said.

Haji Mehboob further added that Muslims want early resolution of the decades-old dispute, contradicting Sunni Waqf Board lawyer Kapil Sibal’s contention that the Supreme Court hearing on the matter be deferred till after the 2019 general elections. He said 25 years have passed since the mosque was destroyed and Muslims didn’t want replay of the deadly communal riots that rocked the country in the aftermath of the demolition. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) criticized Sibal for his remarks in the Supreme Court on Tuesday which it said was politicising the issue by linking it to the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

Commenting on the issue Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, “The Sunni Waqf Board must be congratulated for their brave stand on the matter and disassociating themselves from the statement of Kapil Sibal ji.”

Congress on Tuesday also distanced itself from the remark of the senior lawyer by saying that the views of Kapil Sibal are not that of the Congress party. Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said, “Congress party had been consistently saying that the government and political parties should take a decision on the Ram Janmabhoomi issue at the earliest after consulting the Supreme Court.”
