Shocking visuals of a 16-year-old being assaulted in Nehru Nagar area of Mumbai were recorded on CCTV on Tuesday. The minor was repeatedly slapped by a man who seems to be in his early twenties and a resident of the same building. The man punches and slaps the girl so hard that she faints. According to the police, the girl was on her way for the stitching classes when her neighbour Imran Shahid passed a lewd remark on her and when she protested against the comment she was physically assaulted.
The CCTV footage clearly shows that the onlookers did not do anything to help the woman when she was brutally assaulted by the man. The victim’s friends informed the parents of the girl who then reached the spot and rushed her to a local hospital. The girl was later shifted to Rajawadi Hospital in Ghatkopar. The security guard who witnessed the entire incident said that he was too petrified and stunned to react when the ordeal took place in front of him.
Later, the parents of the victim filed a police complaint against the accused. Reacting to the complaint the accused was arrested by the police on the same day but got the bail next day. Parents of the victim said that the accused sent a few men to their house and threatened them to withdraw the case.
The victim after being discharged from the hospital told NDTV, “He has been harassing me for some time. That day he hit me. When we filed a complaint, he threatened us to take it back. We aren’t going to do that. He should be punished.”
The incident has come to light at a time when women across the globe have been protesting against sexual harassment on social media with a hashtag ‘Me Too’. The hashtag became very popular and women in large number shared their experiences of sexual harassment to make the world aware of the magnitude of the problem.
