Elections Commission is likely to announce the dates for General Assembly Elections in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh, for the year 2017 on Thursday. The dates for the election are likely to be announced at 4PM today. According to sources, Election Commission will address a press conference at Nirvachan Sadan and announce the dates. A few members of EC had indicated recently that Gujarat will go for polls in December 2017 as the current term of the term of the 182-member assembly ends in January, 2018.

Gujarat elections will witness something new this election season as Election Commission will introduce all women polling stations in all the assembly segments. Earlier this week, Chief Election Commissioner AK Joti had said the Gujarat polls will, “without doubt”, be held in December this year.

When AK Jyoti was asked if Gujarat election will be held in two phases, he said that it was yet to be decided. The strength in the 182-member Gujarat House currently comprises 118 BJP MLAs, 42 from the Congress, two from the NCP, and one from JD(U).

The current government rule in Himachal Pradesh will end next month therefore the assembly elections in the state are likely to be com

The Congress has 36 seats in the 68-member Himachal Pradesh Assembly, while BJP has 26. The Himachal Lokhit Party had won 1 seat while Independents bagged 5. Congress announced Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh as the party’s chief ministerial candidate last week who has served as chief minister for six terms.

On the other hand Gujarat polls will be very important for Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) because after the grand victory in 2017 assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh the stakes are very high and 2019 Lok Sabha elctions will depend a lot on 2017 Gujarat assembly polls.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been the Chief Minister of Gujarat for three terms and its pivotal for BJP to win the assembly election to eye for the upcoming Lok Sabha election.
