In a bizarre incident, a Maharashtra HSC book cited ugliness as the reason behind dowry. According to a report by DNA, in a chapter titled ‘Major social problems in India’ of the HSC Sociology text book, it is described how ugly women find it hard to get married and why dowry system still exists within societies.
The book also says that parents of ugly or handicapped women become helpless and pay dowry as per the demands of the bridegroom as family which leads to the rice in the practice of dowry system.
“If a girl is ugly and handicapped, then it becomes a very difficult for her to get married. To marry such girls, bridegroom and his family demand more dowries. Parents of such girls become helpless and pay dowry as per the demands of the bridegroom as family. It leads to rise in the practice of dowry system,” mentions the text of the book.
The dowry system in India has been prevailing in India from the beginning. Although Indian laws against dowries have been in effect for decades, they have been largely criticized for not being implemented properly.
The practice of dowry deaths and murders still continues to take place unchecked in many parts of India and this has further added to the concerns of enforcement.
