Election Commission (EC) was to announce the assembly election dates for the states of Himachal Pradesh and Gujarat on Thursday. But during a press conference held in New Delhi later in the day, the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) only announced the specific dates for Himachal Pradesh assembly elections. Gujarat assembly elections date was not given out by the 3-member EC panel and rather vague information was provided as the CEC said, “Gujarat assembly elections to be held prior to 18 December.”

The assembly elections in Himachal Pradesh will be held on November 8 while the votes counting will be conducted on December 18. Although Gujarat will also see out the counting of votes on December 18 as well but the question of when the elections will be held stayed up in the air. EC’s decision to not to give out a specific date for Gujarat polls have certainly not gone down well with the Twitterati. Many Twitter users lambasted the Election Commission panel for being undecided on a date.

Here are few of the comments:

Don’t bother, it will be announced on Oct 17 after Modi Rally… ..and they will give some “technical” reason for a seperate announcement.

A call from PMO, that’s what. This govt was always shameless, but what a fall for the EC!

This is misuse of institutions. Denies a level playing field. EC stands compromised.

Elections should be conducted in a free and fair manner. Its a mockery of our democracy. Its misuse of power for electoral gains.

What is logic of announcing results after more than 1 month? With electronic machines, results can be collated in a flash.

I also dont understand y poll on 9th nov and results in december…no one works in govt for those 40 days.
