This week on Flashback, we take a look at the life of the former Miss World and the most beautiful woman in the world Aishwarya Rai. She is the first actress from India to get signed with the American Library Association, she is the first Indian actress chosen to be on the jury of the Cannes International Film Festival. She is also the first Indian and south Asian actress to be featured in the Oprah Show. Born on the 1st of November 1973 to a marine biologist Krishnaraj Rai and writer Vrinda Rai in Mangalore, she went to do her schooling at the Arya Vidya Mandir and went to Jai Hind College for a year before she moved on to Ruparel College, on track to become an Architect. While in college, Rai did a few modelling jobs. Following appearances in several television commercials, she entered the Miss India pageant, in which she was placed second. She was then crowned Miss World in the year 1994, after which she began receiving offers to act in film.

Aishwarya made her acting debut in Mani Ratnam’s Tamil biopic film ‘Iruvar’ opposite Mohan Lal, in the same year she made her debut in Bollywood in the film ‘Aur Pyar Ho Gaya’ opposite Bobby Deol. Rai began dating Bollywood actor Salman Khan; their relationship was often reported in the media until the couple separated in 2002. Aishwarya is a two time winner of best actress award, in 2004 she was chosen by TIME magazine as one of the world’s most influential people and in 2009 she was awarded the Padma Shri. In October 2004 a wax figure of Aishwarya was put on display in London’s Madame Tussauds wax museum. In 2007, Aishwarya married Abhishek Bachchan son of Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan and gave birth to a baby girl on the 16th of November 2011. Often perceived as an ambassador of India, Aishwarya has completed nearly a decade endorsing Swiss luxury watch brand and an International soap. She has also been the brand ambassador of global hair care brand L’Oreal since 2003.
