The Gandhis are finding themselves on even more slippery ground today as protests by dissidents have erupted in Karnataka against the appointment of several dynasts.
A top leader Ambareesh has even quit the party claiming that merit has no place in the leadership’s scheme of things as only lineage counts.
It’s a damaging the critique at a time when the Congress has been desperately trying to project itself as a modern meritocracy in tune with an inspirational India where mediocrity cannot be subsidsed by nepotism. The spark has been lit in Karnataka and the Gandhis will be hoping against hope that the fire won’t spread.
