Insight: Big attack on Sharia ‘supremacy’. Time for one India, one law?
While clerics cling to medieval notions of patriarchy. Muslim women lead the fight back to reclaim their dignity, pride and constitutional rights.
Activist Farha Faiz has now called for a ban on Shariat law throughout the country. Faiz has launched a scathing attack against the Muslim Personal Law Board, the self styled guardians and enforcers of Shariat law.
She has compared the body to some of the most medieval groups in the world including the Taliban and Hafiz Saeed’s JuD. Her demand now hits out at the root of the personal laws that suppress rights of muslim women in India.
Much of what is deemed medieval like triple talaq and polygamy by these women activist derive their legitimacy from Shariat laws. As consensus builds against the alleged tyranny of clerics the question that some of these activists hope the court will answer is whether it is time to put country above religion?
