December 16 of the year 2012 was the first instance when the system had let Nirbhaya down. Had the government taken due precautions and harsher measures been set in place, the brutal rape could have been avoided.
But three years later history repeated itself on 18th of December when the old system once again unfailingly let Nirbhaya down. Instead of charging the juvenile for the heinous crime that he had unshamedly committed, the HC decided to set Nirbhaya’s tormentor free from the remand home where he had spent the last 3 years of his life.
By passing the juvenile bill, the lawmakers could have ensured that the juvenile would be the last criminal to walk free from a heinous crime, but that did not happen and the juvenile criminal will finally walk out on Sunday, December 20.
