A film called ‘Aligarh’, directed by Hansal Mehta, has just been released this weekend. The film is based on the true story of Professor Ramachandra Siras, who was suspended from AMU in 2010, after a sting operation showed him having consensual sex with a man.

He went to court. The court re-instated him back in AMU. A few days later, the professor was found dead under mysterious circumstances. Now, fringe groups in Aligarh have stopped the screening of the film ‘Aligarh’, saying that it is defamatory for the city.

The question is — is the city of Aligarh being shamed by the film, or by the people who’ve stopped its screening?
