After the deluge last week, people in Bengaluru are witnessing a massive demolition drive. The municipal corporation and the state govt have identified more than 1900 encroachments in the city. For the fourth day in a row, bulldozers are razing buildings. More than 100 houses have been demolished, some in parts, some completely.
There are families with pregnant women and children forced to seek shelter like refugees. The govt says illegal constructions have clogged storm drains, houses are built on lake beds, leaving the city vulnerable to major floods. The residents say they had all the permits from the municipal corporation.
The question is: Is this the best way to save Bengaluru from floods? Are only middle-class homes being targeted? What about the big builders who duped home buyers into buying illegal property?
