Nation at 9: Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah turns off Cauvery tap for Tamil Nadu
The Cauvery crisis has descended into parochial politics of pride. As Karnataka Siddaramaiah turns-off the Cauvery tap, depriving Tamil Nadu of their share of water.
He mulls openly defying the SC order. With the blessings of his party top brass, the Karnataka Chief Minister may be angling towards portraying himself as a political martyr and a true son of the soil. It will, in addition consolidate his position within a party wrecked by factionalism and make him emerge as the supreme Congress leader of Karnataka.
But for this, his political gambit must pay off and not spectacularly backfire. After all, defying the highest court of the land may have serious ramifications.
As Siddaramaiah rushes back home for a special session of the assembly, he hopes to build political consensus on the contentious issue. Question is: Is Kannadiga pride bigger than lives?
