Nation At 9: India isolates terror state Pak, but Bollywood star struck?
India has decided to boycott and isolate Pakistan. The Prime Minister set the ball rolling yesterday by deciding to pull out of the Saarc summit scheduled for November in Islamabad. His bold step gave four other Saarc nations the confidence to follow suit and dump Pakistan.
But while the Prime Minister of India has taken a stand against Pakistan, the prime movers and shakers of Bollywood are not prepared to isolate Pak stars.
Karan Johar, who stands to lose the most monetarily if Pakistani artistes are to be declared persona non grata on Indian soil, says that such a move will yield nothing.
Anurag Kashyap has backed him, so has Saif Ali Khan and a whole host of other Bollywood beacons.
A simple explanation would be to say that Bollywood’s leading lights are out of synch with the mood of the nation not to mention the stance taken by the govt of the day. But I am afraid it isn’t as simple as that.
Patriotism is being sacrificed at the altar of profit, which is ironic for an industry that sells patriotism on screen for profit. It’s also a little rich to be speaking up for the so-called ambassadors of Pakistan’s peace constituency when some of them like Fawad Khan, Mahira Khan have not even tweeted to condemn the Uri attacks something they did after the Paris attacks.
We want to know whether business should be as usual with Pakistan’s so-called peace constituency when extraordinary times demand extraordinary measures?
