Amid Sheena Bora murder controversy, Rakesh Maria removed as Mumbai Police Commissioner, promoted as DG Home Guards

MUMBAI: One of the most renowned cops in Mumbai, Rakesh Maria who exposed several facts about the ongoing controversy over Sheena Bora murder mystery has been removed from his post as the Mumbai Police Commissioner and promoted as the new DG Home Guards.

Ahmed Javed has replaced Rakesh Maria as Commissioner of Mumbai Police.

The order has been issued officially to Maria who will hand over the charge on Tuesday itself following which Javed would take over the charge with immediate effect.

While Maria was busy solving the Sheena Bora murder mystery involving her mother Indrani Mukerjea, wife of former Star India CEO Peter Mukerjea, Maharashtra Home Secretary KP Bakshi has claimed that the government wanted to issue these orders ahead of beginning session. The order has been issued even as Maria has been personally monitoring the biggest murder scandals of the year.

At the same time, it is said that this promotion and his removal as the Mumbai Police Commissioner has nothing to do with his involvement in the ongoing investigation of any particular case.

Any Indian Police Service (IPS) officer who has completed 30 years in IPS is qualified to be promoted as a DGP rank officer but is promoted on the basis of the seniority against the vacancies.  The Home Ministry of Government of India takes a call on the DGP posts for each state.

58-year-old Maria was eligible for the post in 2011 itself and was set to retire next year in December.
