MUMBAI: In a move that has shocked the nation, Rakesh Maria who until today served as the Commissioner of Police, Mumbai has been promoted as the DG Home Guards and Ahmed Javed has taken over his position with immediate effect.
Maria was actively involved in the mysterious murder case of Sheena Bora, daughter of Indrani Mukerjea who is the wife of former Star India CEO Peter Mukerjea. The decision announced on Tuesday is likely to be a big setback on the ongoing investigation in the case.
There are several reasons that are now possibly coming up for the shocking promotion of Rakesh Maria. These may possibly include:
•His close proximity with Peter Mukerjea
•Resentment within the Mumbai Police Force
•He showed undue interest in the Sheena Bora murder case
But, what is further shocking is that, according to the sources, it is not only Rakesh Maria who has been shunted as four other top officials who were closely working with Maria on the Sheena Bora murder case have been transferred as well.
Four others who have been asked to move from their posts include Khar SP Sanjay Kadam, Khar Inspector, Lead Inspector Dinesh Kadam and Khar PS In-Charge Dhatre Barkhude. It is to be noted that Khar Police Station is the prime station that is investigating the Sheena Bora murder controversy.
Out of the lot, three officials were actively involved and directly reporting to Rakesh Maria on the Sheena Bora murder case.
However, Maharashtra Home Secretary KP Bakshi while explaining his reasons for promoting Rakesh Maria amid the Sheena Bora murder controversy, said, “The promotion for Rakesh Maria has been advanced. It was earlier scheduled for September 30; but it was not possible for that time keeping in mind the festival season. We wanted to give enough time to the new Police Commissioner to settle down and understand the law and order situation in the city.”
Key accused of the case, Indrani Mukerjea, her former husband Sanjeev Khanna and driver Shyamvar Rai are currently in the judicial custody for their alleged involvement in the murder.
