UTTAR PRADESH: Following violence of beef eating rumours that were being spread in Akhilesh Yadav ruled Uttar Pradesh, 21 people have been arrested in the Mainpuri district of the State.
Violence erupted on Friday after an angry mob went on the rampage reportedly over rumours of cow slaughter. The violence led to several shops and police vehicles being set on fire.
Mainpuri is situated around 100 kms from Agra and approximately 200 km from the U.P. capital, Lucknow.
As informed by the District Magistrate, Chandrapal Singh, the violence began after a cow’s carcass was found near a field of the village. The people who usually remove bodies of animals had taken away the cow and were removing its skin. This led to the rumours that the cow did not die naturally but was slaughtered. “But when a post-mortem was conducted, the rumours were found to be false and the situation was is under control now,” Chandrapal was quoted as saying in a media report.
