NEW DELHI: With the Supreme Court imposing ‘Environment Compensation Charge’ on heavy commercial vehicles entering Delhi, the price rise of essential goods and commodities will take place as well.
The additional charge imposed by the Apex Court would lead to increase in the transportation charges as well, which in return will lead to an obvious rice in the prices of essential goods and commodities.
Essentials such as pulses, vegetable and other such commodities will witness a rise in the prices, hitting the already inflation-hit consumers.
Delhi traffic police submitted to National Green Tribunal (NGT) that the commercial vehicles, not destined for Delhi, prefer passing by Delhi, as the toll fee charged is comparatively cheaper than the ones charged on other routes.
Also, NGT has instructed that the commercial vehicles which are not booked for Delhi will not be allowed to pass by the city. They will have to take an alternative route, via NH71 and NH71A, which will lead to NH8.
The ones passing by will now have to pay ‘compensation charges’ varying from ₹500 for four-axle to ₹1000 for three-axle, applicable from November 1, 2015.
Traffic police also submitted that on an average around 66,000 vehicles entered Delhi every day in the month of August, which was taken into serious consideration by the Supreme Court bench headed by NGT chairperson Justice Swatanter Kumar.
One of the main sources of inferior air quality in Delhi is vehicular pollution. By this tax, an attempt is made to decrease the number of vehicles entering the city, which will then help in improving the air quality.
Also, the tax collected in the form of ‘Environmental Compensation Charge’ will be submitted with Delhi Pollution Control Committee, which will then invest it in improving the air quality by concentrating on the improvement of roads, especially for cyclists and pedestrians.
Well, the degree to which it is going to benefit the air quality will be known after a considerable time period, but for now, the degree to which consumers will be affected is very well calculative.
